This is a brief post about fixing the “msoledbsql.msi feature resource unavailable” error when repairing or reinstalling SQL Server.

The error

I’ve recently had to do a repair of the SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition instance that I have on my PC, and I’ve ran into the following error message:

Error text:

Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package ‘msoledbsql.msi’ in the box below.

The fix

  1. Close the failed repair (in my case) window.
  2. Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features
  3. Locate Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server in the list of installed programs.
  4. Right click on it and click Uninstall.
  5. Re-run the repair process.

Conclusion

That’s the post.
The “msoledbsql.msi feature resource unavailable” error is a silly one and has an equally silly fix.
